TerraCycle recycles the unrecyclable—items not typically accepted by curbside recycling services. You or your group can become a recycling champion for your community and keep trash out of landfills and incinerators. Plus, when you recycle with us, you earn TerraCycle Recycling Rewards—points that can be redeemed as a cash donation to the school, charity, or nonprofit of your choice (including your own organization).
To recycle on behalf of your community, be sure to indicate your Organization Type (e.g., Retail Store, Other) and estimate how many people you will be collecting recycling for under “# People Collecting” when you sign up.

Although the above programs are in-store drop-off programs, you can still help your community recycle with these programs! Collect hard-to-recycle trash from community members and drop it off for recycling at popular retailers.
Any individual or group can recycle with TerraCycle on behalf of their community. Many nonprofits, local businesses, and more recycle with us. Anyone who wants to make a difference in their community is invited to participate! Remember, it’s easy and completely FREE. (Hey, schools, we have special resources for you here!)
Clean Up Peterborough is a volunteer group that focuses on community cleanups. After connecting with TerraCycle, they expanded to include separating cigarette butts for recycling. In less than three months, they collected 50,189 cigarette butts in just 10 cleanups! Writing instruments were eventually added, and a new goal has been set to bring every eligible free recycling program to Peterborough. Their motto, “Let’s make the world a better place,” is the inspiration for their hopes of community education and outreach with other like-minded organizations.
The Waste Reduction Group, an ad hoc committee of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association (SLNA-WRG), was founded in 2019 to improve the effectiveness of waste reduction efforts in the St. Lawrence neighborhood in downtown Toronto. Since then, the SLNA-WRG has continued to grow while partnering with community locations and local businesses to enable the drop off of hard-to-recycle products for recycling and to promote the use of reusable containers. The SLNA-WRG strategically placed over 40 cigarette receptacles in highly trafficked public areas in the neighborhood. So far, over 400,000 cigarette butts have been collected and recycled through TerraCycle!

Plan a recycling drive for items with a longer lifespan that people typically don’t need to recycle frequently, like tools and toys. Consider hosting these regularly, such as quarterly, at public spaces like farmer’s markets, municipal buildings, or religious institutions.
Plan cleanup events to motivate your community members to pick up cigarette waste and beautify your neighborhoods, public spaces, and parks. To drum up participation, host cleanups on environmental holidays, like Earth Day and World Oceans Day. Join hundreds of cities in North America that recycle cigarette butts, packaging, and more with TerraCycle through the UNSMOKE Cigarette Free Recycling Program. Earn $1 per pound of cigarette waste you recycle through this program!
You will automatically earn TerraCycle points in your account when you send in qualifying shipments of trash through participating TerraCycle free recycling programs. Redeem your points as a cash donation to the school, nonprofit, or charity of your choice (even your own organization)!
