Student-led initiative aims to decrease single-use waste from takeout

According to the University of Alberta’s Zero Waste Dashboard, 771.87 tonnes of “landfilled materials” were collected in 2020–21.

This total includes North CampusSouth CampusCampus Saint-Jean, and Augustana Campus. Items that are sent to the landfill include styrofoam, coffee cups and lids, chip bags, snack wrappers, and pop cups, straws, and lids.

Recycling bins for cigarette butts coming to downtown Chilliwack

Folks will soon see fewer butts around Chilliwack… cigarette butts, that is.

A total of 30 small recycling bins will be installed throughout downtown Chilliwack specifically for smokers to toss their cigarette butts into.

It’s all part of a new program being launched by the Downtown Chilliwack Business Improvement Association (BIA), in partnership with Ruth and Naomi’s (RAN) and the City of Chilliwack.

Green solution for the beauty industry

It is estimated that 3 million tonnes of plastic are thrown away in Canada each year and only 9% of this waste is recycled. This means that the majority of discarded plastic ends up in landfills. Faced with this alarming reality, L'Oréal's consumer products division and TerraCycle have teamed up to offer customers of certain Jean Coutu stores the opportunity to recycle expired beauty product containers.
